BKK - The Fast Food Chains

GF secretly harboured a plan to try all the different types of fastfood in BKK. Everywhere we go she would drop hints to me.

Gf: "dear look. There's a _*insert the fastfood chain*_ there. Wonder how their food taste like"
Me: "erh like how _*insert the fastfood chain*_ should taste like?"
Gf: "No, it's different. Come you should try it."
Me: "orh..."

Burger King and MacDonalds

Me : "Sh*t... i need to go to the toilet. Drank too much water liao"
Gf : "Hey look. There's a Mac nearby. Use their toilet and maybe we can take five, sit down and have a ice-cold coke or something there too."
Me : "okie."

After the deed was done, i met up with GF at the counter.

Gf : "you wanna share a meal with me?"
Me : "huh? orr okie."
Gf : "Nuggets or MacChicken or 2-piece meal?"
Me : "Large coke will do."
Gf to Mac-staff : "2-piece meal, upsize"

So this was what we ordered. A 2-piece chicken meal. One piece was the original and the other a hot and spicy one. And i must say GF was damn right on this. Their Chicken taste much better than ours. Worth mentioning was the Spicy one. The meat was pipping hot, juices from the piece was making a mess out of every little piece of tissues we have. Not really a creative choice but Mac in BKK do offer some safe options should one wishes for some familar taste. Call 1711 for their delivery service ;) i'm loving it.

A&W

We managed to find this A&W by asking around. From the BTS counters to the tourism police to just about anyone. Ever since A&W pulled out of Singapore, GF have been craving for some good old Root Beer Float and curly fries. Well, all in the good name of seeking out fast food chains in BKK.

Okie so the float was decent, the curly fries were okie, but the chicken was bad. It was too dry and lacks any flavour. Only the skin did have some flavours of salt and peppers being used. Now we know why they have to pulled out of Singapore. My fondest memories of A&W was spending time after class at the outlet in Clementi for a root beer float and curly fries. Back den the food was still decent. Looking at how things are getting, i have come to believe Mary Brown at Tampines stands a better chance of surviving than A&W.

And if u do have a SO like mine, who pledge to seek out all fast food joints, ask her to give A&W in BKK a miss. Even the Grillers at Tiong Bahru Plaza L4 does a better job than them. Not to mention you dun have to fly overseas for a tall glass of root beer float.

8O oh no! I am fast becoming a fast food junkie myself!~!~!~!~!~

Oh by the way, we tried the KFC at the Bangkok Airport on our way back. Nothing worth mentioning. I'll take Singapore's KFC anytime over theirs.

Big C - MK Restaurants

We came to Big C shopping mall for lunch. There were many choices around at the top floor. However MK catches our eyes with it's huge MK sign. We stood outside the restaurant looking thru the menu while i spy the diners inside. Seems like everyone's having steamboat.

GF dun takes spicy stuffs so i had to be extra careful of the choice of meals. Steamboat seems like a good choice.

We ordered loads of meats, vegs, dumplings, eggs, prawns...The soup base was full of wholesome veg sweetness. Wow! even thou the ice green tea was free flow, i prefer the soup over the drink. Damn... it was good stuff. The marinated pork slices were extremely good. The texture was almost like chewing on freshly cooked prawns. I have never tasted pork this way!~!~. The rest of the stuffs were good but it's the reason of simple but good ingredients that makes a perfect meal!~!~!

They have got this special sauce which taste like the "zhu chang fen" sauce we have here in Singapore. Another worth mentioning sauce was the light brown sauce which they served with the meat. It tasted like the tempura dipping sauce but with a slight sour punch. It's good!

We saw Burger King on our way back. Made a mental note to come back to try. GF have this thing abt trying the fastfood chains in another country. I aint complainting.

Got loads of fruits back from Big C. We love the way they slices the fruits up. And their fruits were good and cheap. Well except for that stall selling mangoes outside Asia Hotel who sold me one mango for 60thb. And did i mention they were very sour!

Apart from that, the melons were extremely fresh and sweet. Cost like 15 to 25baht.

Before i came, i made a note to try this dessert which i often had at the Thailand fair in singapore. They are like little fruits and vegetables. Inside is a generous filling of huang dou sa. Yummy!~!~

Bangkok Thailand, The Land of Smiles - Chapter 2

Showing the good EatFatFat Spirit, GF decided we should order their food via room service after our bathe. After a 2 hours flight and a 45 minutes taxi ride, boy we were getting hungry. Going thru the menu, i quickly set my eyes on the Thai Fried Chicken with rice and a coconut drink. GF ordered a Double Cheese Burger and a Fish and Chips. Boy, was she hungry or what? lolz

My order of Thai Fried Chicken with rice, and GF's order of Fish and Chips :

After dinner and some cleaning up, we turned in for the night. Lighted a aroma-therapatic cone in the ashtray by the bed. At times i wonder. Why does one fight so hard for happiness when she's jus besides you. What's better than to spend the rest of your life with your love one by your side, making sure she has covered herself well with blanket ( okie, she said i sleep like the figure 8 -_- ) , watching her fall asleep everynight .

Actually we spend most of our nights talking about the day that has past, our thoughts on any and everything we saw. We lied on the bed, with GF by my side, we'll engage in some pillow chat. She's those type that falls asleep easily and gets woken up pretty easily ( okie she woke up by her own, i didn't wake her up with my snoring. .... .... ... okie maybe jus once or twice ). It's funny how i keep talking and talking without realising she's sound asleep. Only to find out when she doesn't reply to my questions. And she does snore as well. Not very loud but kinda like a 3-year old Daikin aircon. hummmm.... hummmm..... hummm..... hummmmm..... lolz

It is for this very reason i always made it a point to let her get into her sweet slumberland before i off the TV and cuddle up besides her. Sleeping time loh

The next morning we had our breakfast at the hotel . Samran Place provides excellent breakfast every moring from 0630 to 1030. However, as they they dun have an extensive menu, we kinda have to choose from 6 choices. For me things are easier as i always have the American Breakfast set. I just can't do without eggs and toast. Especially fried suuny side ups with such wonderful runny yoke and a crisp base. Jus a dash of salt and pepper. For me, i enjoy having these simple and ever so non-pretentious food.

Pancakes were good. It was served hot but there's only 3 pathetic small pieces of it on a plate. Hardly enough to fill the EatFatFat stomach. GF took a first bite and look at me as what Jacky Wu and NoNo would have done when they bite into delicious food. It was good.

GF had the Thai Fried Rice set. I had a few bites and it taste great! The peice of fried egg taste great too except that it was a little oily. I'm not complaining. Sometimes even when GF couldn't finish her eggs, i'll offer my service to do the eggs justice. Only after we came back to Singapore den we realised that there was a bird-flu case in Indonesia and Malaysia. Hmmm.. seems like having fried suuny-side-ups ( allow me to stress, RUNNY yoke!~!~!~! )for breakfast every morning doesn't seem like a good idea.
After breakfast we went for some shopping. Gf had planned a very well-thought intinery and we followed with SAF precision.

Bangkok Thailand, The Land of Smiles - Chapter 1

We took a flight off Singapore on the 22nd Feb 2006 to Bangkok, Thailand. Arrived in Bangkok around Bangkok time 1945. After settling our travel documents, we quickly made our way to the taxi stand. This was my first trip to Bangkok ( that's if u minus the SAF-Sponsored one to Kanchanaburi camp )

One thing to note on their taxi service is that some of them goes by meter while others ( most of them in fact ) goes by per trip even thou they have the meter cab top on. So be sure to ask if they goes by meter. If they dun, decline politely and wait for the next one.

One thing we notice was the colours of their taxis. From green to yellow to purple to pink. Very colourful indeed. Their cabs also comes in mostly in the shape of Toyota Vios and Altis.

From the Airport to our hotel was a 45 minutes drive costing about 270bht. We stayed at Samran Place Deluxe room 312.

The room was very big. There was a big King size bed and a small living roomm. The room was simple and clean. After all this was a budget hotel and to have such a standard was a plus. Cleaniness values tops in my opinion.

After unpacking our stuffs, we took a bathe and decided to turn in early for the night to prepare for the long day ahead. The bathe room layout was simple but it's very clean and spacious. The towels were clean and smell fresh. Nothing could be said about the luxious aspect of the room but it was definately spacious and clean. Jus as long as it's clean and "clean".

What made us Eatfatfat - Part II

More from Bab Noodles. The Steamed Dumplings. Our advice : give it a miss. Out of this plate here, only 2 whole pieces were spotted. The rest were dumpling skin....

Teriyaki Chicken Udon. This is very nice. However do note that their soup tend to be a bit salty. Bab was never stingy when it comes to ordering the mains. Look at the amount of Teriyaki Chicken inside there.

Shao La ( Roast Meats ). Can be found from hawker centres, to food centres, to Foood Courts. This pic was taken a few weeks back when we had lunch at Boon Lay Market.

Fried Prawn Rolls from Tong Shui ( Zion Road ). Bad service aside, this little side dish does pulled one back on the reviews. A plate of 3s sets u back $3.90 but each and every single one is filled with fresh and juicy prawns with mango pulp inside.

Lo-Hei at The Noble House. The must have dish of each and every Lunar New Year. This particular one we had was served with slices of raw salmon. I ain't a big fan of raw fish/meat so i usually jus dig into the vegs. Perhaps the only "salad" that Gf and i like. Opps, make that the only 2 ( Nearly forgotten GF love another local "salad", the rojak - only yutiao).

What made us Eatfatfat - Part I

Fav ( well, more like the most conveient choice ) place for a meal. Bab Noodles at Millenia Walk. Few of our favourites include The fried Oysters, Teriyaki Chicken, Korean Red Date Tea, Ginseng Chicken Soup, udon... Yeah i know what you're thinking.... Bab does sounds a bit fusion-overdosed but if u do happened to be nearby, no harm giving it a try.

Ginseng Chicken Soup
Fried Soft-Shell Crab Tempura Style
Chawamushii
All time fav beer. Discovered Hoegaarden in my early working life when happy hours were a common practice. All i can say is, once u had the best, other's jus a compromise. Gf's not a fan of beer thou. Damn... i miss the fried chicken wings at No. 5 to go with the ice cold Hoegaarden... minus the peanuts thou....
Nothing like a perfect glass of ice cold Hoegaarden.

Fishy business at Fish & Co.

Name : Fish & Co. (branch)
Tel : 68984237
Fax : 68984248
Address : 1 Jurong West Central 2#03-34 Jurong Point Shopping Centre Singapore 648886
Business Hours : 11am-10pm

First of all, i must really praise Fish and Co ( Jurong Point ) for making our dinner there tonight an interesting and enjoyable one. After being thru "hell" of a customer service at Tong Shui ( Zion Road ), this evening we must have been in the Utopia of excellent customer service.

Service was prompt and friendly. Staff fulfilled our constant requests to top up our drinks, more of the fabulous garlic better sauce etc. And they did it each and everytime with a smile and oozing of excellent customer service.

Food-wise, we were extremely satified with the Seafood Platter, the Fish and Chips , and the Passionfruit drink.

Great value for money. And excellent service awaits you at Fish and Co.

The array of sauces served. Personally, i love the red sauce. Tasted like chilli sauce in vinegar but i kind of tot it could have had tomatoes added. But this sauce is good!~!~!~ GF on the other hand helps herself generously to the butter sauce.

The side order of the garlic bread. Now this was bad. The bread wasn't toasted, but we tot the service more than cover for it.

This is the drink we had. The fizzy Passion Fruit drink. An additional SGD$2 gave us unlimited refills. Sibey Wu Hua ( hokkien for super worth it )!~!~!

GF suddenly have a tremendous craving for their Fish and Chips. Considering the main target of the meal was the Seafood Platter, we ordered one to share. The fish was absolutely fresh and tender! The batter-coast was fried to al-dente. So it's really the "crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside! The sauce was unidentifiable but goes well woth the fish! YUMMY. But den on a side note, i think Fish and Co are very generous with the fries. Too much liao, 2 of us barely finish the fries!~!~! But den again, i'm not the "fries" person, GF is.

The star of the meal arrived. The Seafood Platter ( for 2 ). Very huge serving of seafood. Calamaris, Fish fillet, prawns, mussles, and "OMG"-more fries!~!~!~!!~!~! One thing worth mentioning are their mussles. They are so fresh and meaty!~!~!~ Should have ordered their mussles as side.hmmm...

Fishy business.. hmmm... wonder where they got the excellent staffs from....

GEMS of Singapore-Definately not Tong Shui cafe

I have been to Tong Shui ( TS ) at Zion Road for many times. However i've been let down by the poor service each and everytime. Only reason for me going back time after time was the atmosphere and the plasma TV showing SCV Chinese movies. Apart from that, food wise so-so, drink wise so-so.

But service wise, honestly, very terrible, Perhaps we were spoilt by the crew at TCC GWC, but there were many areas which i have not seen any improvement over my last few visits.

1. TS serves a bowl of peanuts and packets of wet tissues to customers when they were seated. However as we noticed, some tables were served accordingly, some, like ours, we missed out;

2. Waiting time for your order, be it drinks or food takes forever to come. Wondering if the Plasma TV's there to keep the waiting customers entertained;

4. Even to get our bill takes 20 minutes!

We ever did went there once on a weekend evening and TS was packed. Asked the staff if there were any seats available and the reply was food and drinks have to wait for 45 minutes. WTF. I mean if the service was good, we wouldn't mind waiting a bit longer on a busy day but for Tong Shui, it's a NO-NO. But then again, even on a weekday we always have to wait for around 20 to 30 minutes before we are served our orders. Sometimes our food came way before our drinks.

There are a few pointers i noted. Firstly, even on a busy weekend, there will only be max 4 staffs running the cafe. Ever once we saw a gentlemen, whom we presume was the manager, reprimanding a staff. In the name of god, do it somewhere else, do it after work, do it some other time but now when the cafe is busy. I mean even for a weekday like today, with slightly over 25 customers( not even half filled ), the 2 staffs were hardly enough to handle the flow.

Secondly, the knowledge of the staffs were hardly adequet. Being in a service industry myself, i understand the importance of good service rendered to the customer and how important that each and every paying-customer gets certain level of good service here. When i want to know how a cheese baked chicken wings tasted like, i dun expect to hear " chicken wings baked in cheese loh".

Front line staffs should be able to answer queries from customers with regards to the product they carry. Be it students working part-time or what nought, they should be trained and re-trained.

As such i am very very disappointed by the standards of service there. You forgot about the complimentary tibits and wet-tissues, you made me wait for my orders like i would for taxis on a Friday night, i asked you for the bill you said okie but went on to clear tables after tables, you forgot about the complimentary fortune cookie when you bring my bill over. Come to think of it, you dun deserve the service charge i paid for.

You know what, i will definatedly give Tong Shui a miss.
